How Email Verification Actually Works (Syntax, MX, and Risk)

The four layers of email verification

Most people think email verification is just a regex. It is not. A real verification pipeline runs four independent checks, and skipping any one of them leaves a hole fraudsters walk straight through.

1. Syntax (RFC 5322)

The address must be structurally valid. This catches typos like `john@@gmail` or trailing dots. Syntax alone, though, says nothing about whether the mailbox exists.

2. Domain & MX records

The real signal is the domain's MX (Mail Exchange) records. If a domain has no MX records, it cannot receive mail — full stop. Verix performs a live DNS lookup on every check, so you know the domain can actually accept mail right now, not last quarter.

3. Disposable & role detection
